AI protects the Olympics

Just as your artificial intelligence (AI) security cameras do so much more than previously imagined — sending alerts, enabling smart search via natural language, and allowing entry into your parking lots and more — AI will be making a multi-pronged appearance at the Olympics.

French legislation passed in 2023 allows the use of AI video surveillance for a temporary period. AI will be applied in a number of ways, such as to detect abnormal events or behavior.

For example, artificial intelligence may be deployed to identify crowded, high-risk areas, before they become problems. AI identifies spaces where loitering occurs by object accounting, pinpointing incidents before they happen.

AI used in conjunction with access control can notify authorities when a specific entryway has been breached. This is important when monitoring an event the magnitude of the Olympics where there may be lots of exits.

Just as important, AI dramatically can decrease the number of false alarms that can be expected. This function is key, because every false alarm that goes out is time and money wasted.

An Olympics video surveillance system with natural language search abilities can allow those in charge to easily identify people, objects, and vehicles that may be of interest. For instance, they can search “man with blue shirt and black backpack” and pull up all relevant recordings. This allows for speedier apprehension of the suspected perpetrator.

AI will also be deployed to detect online abuse targeting athletes at the Olympic Games and other sporting events, according to the Committee, in order to “encourage high standards of transparency, responsibility and safety to maintain trust while harnessing the power of AI.”

These are just some of the AI-powered features video surveillance technology has today. While we don’t know exactly which features they’re using, you can be sure you’re going to be seeing a lot more of this soon.
